We are delighted to share that Guillermo Sánchez-Garrido Campos has successfully defended his doctoral thesis, earning the highest distinction: sobresaliente cum laude. This achievement marks a major milestone in Guille’s scientific career and a proud moment for our lab.
His thesis, titled “Modulation of Cortical Excitability and Oscillatory Dynamics by Transcranial Electrical Stimulation”, was directed by Prof. Javier Márquez Ruiz and defended in Seville on December 5, 2025. The work provides a rigorous and integrative mechanistic framework for understanding how transcranial electrical stimulation (tES)—including tDCS and tACS—modulates neuronal and network dynamics in the brain.
🔬 About the thesis
In this dissertation, Guillermo investigates how the efficacy of tES depends on three fundamental factors:
- The anatomical alignment of neurons with the electric field,
- The oscillatory state of the brain, and
- The interaction between stimulation parameters and neuronal subtype.
These results deepen our mechanistic understanding of how neuronal morphology, network dynamics, and oscillatory context interact to shape the outcomes of electrical neuromodulation, offering important implications for designing personalized and brain-state-sensitive stimulation protocols.
