Javier Márquez Ruiz graduated in Biological Sciences from the University of Seville in 2002, where he later obtained his doctorate at the Physiology and Neuroscience Program. His research work began at the Department of Physiology and Zoology of the University of Seville where he studied the behavior of the oculomotor system during the sleep-wake cycle in cats with Dr. Miguel Escudero. After obtaining his doctorate in 2008, he start teaching with an assistant professor position at the Pablo de Olavide University where he joined the Neuroscience Division, directed by Prof. José María Delgado. In this group, he began to study the neural mechanisms underlying memory and learning processes in awake rabbits, with special emphasis on the processes carried out by the motor cortex. Since 2010, Dr. Javier Márquez is Associated Professor at the Pablo de Olavide University. In 2014, he received the VII Research Prize “Real Maestranza de Caballería”, awarded to young researchers, for his studies on the modulatory effects of transcranial electrical stimulation on synaptic processes that mediate learning. He currently teaches in Biotechnology and Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and is Coordinator of the Master in Fundamental and Translational Neuroscience at the Pablo de Olavide University.

In recent years, Dr. Javier Márquez has developed a new research line focused on studying the effects of transcranial electrical stimulation on neuronal excitability, memory and learning processes, and the generation of artificial sensations in awake animals. During last years, he has established the necessary infrastructure to rigorously address the neuronal mechanisms that mediate brain stimulation effects in animal models by founding the “Brain Stimulation translational Laboratory” at the Pablo de Olavide University.
