Last week we had the 4th Plenary Meeting of the Neurotwin project in the beautiful city of Rome. Neurotwin is a European project in which participates several groups from all around Europe (Spain, Italy, Germany, etc.) each group is specialized in some part of the process (we are specialized in using tES in awake mice)
For 3 days we have been exchanging experiences and results with all our colleagues. These meetings allowed us to create synergies and get to reinforce the collaboration network this project has created.
We presented some promising results:
- Using Neuropixels has allowed us to increase the time of neuronal activity recordings from one neuron once a week to many neurons at the same time for 2-3 hours.
- We have been able to observe the differences of the tES effect between glutamatergic and GABAergic populations when optogenetically stimulated
- We are working on a high-resolution E-field characterization in awake mice.
All of those has been achieved using awake mice, which facilitates enormously the translation of the results to humans. Within months one of the partners will start to apply tES to Alzheimer and dementia patients thanks to our results and our colleagues.
